Tent Requirements
Please note: this is only meant as a guideline and does not cover every situation. Any discrepancies between this guideline and the International Fire Code 2018 will be defaulted to the latter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Neosho Fire Department at 451-8021.
All tents must be inspected by the fire department prior to use. An occupant limit may also be determined by the fire inspector.
Tents cannot not be located within 20 feet of any other tents, structures, lot lines, vehicles, etc. and a 12 foot access shall be provided around the tent for fire department access. The area around the tent must be cleared of combustible vegetation to a distance of 30 feet.
Tents require a minimum of TWO exits, which must be marked and must be illuminated (an interior light in the tent is sufficient if it lights the actual sign, the sign itself does not have to be internally illuminated). Emergency lighting may be required. A larger tent and/or certain uses may require additional exits. Exits must not be obstructed.
Documentation of structural stability shall be provided.
The tent must be certified as fire resistant. This will usually be marked on the tent and the inspector will ask to see it.
A fire extinguisher for each 400 square feet is required and must have a minimum 2-A rating. Note: usage of the tent may require additional extinguishers or different ratings. This includes, but is not limited to, cooking and sale of fireworks.
“NO SMOKING” signs shall be present and smoking is not permitted in tents.
Combustible materials are not permitted in tents (including hay, straw, etc.) and ignitable liquid storage must be kept a minimum of 50 feet from the tent.
Usage of tents for heating/cooking equipment and displays of motorized vehicles have special requirements.
Other uses of tents or certain circumstances may have special requirements. Contact the fire department if you have any questions.
