Carnes Wagon Factory/Motor Company

Carnes Motor Company, located at 117 N. Jefferson Street, was the oldest continuous business in Neosho when it closed in 2010. James Carnes came to Neosho in 1867. He moved into an old building on the northwest corner of Jefferson Street. Over the next several years he expanded his business interests in Neosho. In 1911, he constructed a new, 50 x60 foot structure, on the east side of Jefferson Street. A second building was constructed on the corner in 1924. After the closing of the business in 2010, the 1924 structure was deemed unsafe and razed. The 1921 structure still stands and the owners have preserved the original Coca-Cola mural on the north side.
